Building the Which? mobile app

During my valuable tenure at Which?, I had the privilege of driving a significant app strategy transition that resulted in the successful launch of the new Which? mobile app. This strategic shift not only involved retiring legacy technology but also led to substantial cost savings. Collectively, we achieved impressive growth, as the app's user base expanded from 40k to an inspiring 100k monthly users. My responsibilities spanned constructing compelling business cases, securing crucial investments, and seamlessly integrating tools and services into our mobile app platform.

Outcomes

  • User Base Growth: Scaled the app's user base from 40k to 100k monthly users.
  • Cost Savings: Successfully achieved cost savings of over £50k per month by retiring legacy technology.
  • Strategic Integration: Seamlessly integrated key mobile app platforms, including Amplitude, Airship, and Appsflyer, for enhanced performance.
  • Leadership Impact: Provided guidance as a line manager, mentoring and shaping a team of two product managers.

Big Data at The Guardian

I've added support for creating per-project .commitrc files that override your global settings for that particular project. Went with YAML for these because personally I'm sick of quoting keys in JSON all the time, or accidentally leaving in a trailing comma.

Improvements

  • Added per-project .commitrc configuration files
  • Improved performance when working with projects with large binary files
  • Fixed a bug that could cause Commit to crash when autocommitting after deleting a recently active branch

KFC Mobile App

I released this thing last week hoping a couple of people would say "awesome job" and make me feel good about what I'd built but instead I just got a ton of people shaming me on Twitter for being such a horrible person for only shipping a light UI.

Improvements

  • Added dark mode support
  • Improved input field responsiveness when writing a commit message in a project with a large number of changed files
  • Made keyboard shortcut for opening the Commit window customizable
  • Deleted my Twitter account

Marketing & Mobile Apps at Nando's

Commit is a command palette-style Git client you can pull up from anywhere with a keyboard shortcut that makes it really easy to commit your work. It uses the "last modified" timestamp of the files in all of your projects to automatically know which project you're in the middle of working on, so any time you pull up the UI it's already got the right project selected — you just have to type your commit message, hit Cmd + Enter and your changes are captured.

I'd be lying if I really thought this was that useful but I was looking for an excuse to learn macOS development and here we are. It's open source at least so maybe you can find something interesting in the code even if the app itself is a total waste of hard drive space.

Outcomes

  • Added dark mode support
  • Improved input field responsiveness when writing a commit message in a project with a large number of changed files
  • Made keyboard shortcut for opening the Commit window customizable
  • Deleted my Twitter account

Launching my career at the Financial Times

During my time at the Financial Times (FT), I played a crucial role in managing end-to-end product development for significant redesigns and successful new product launches. I was responsible for overseeing multiple product roadmaps, organising backlogs, and making strategic prioritisation decisions to enhance user experiences. My focus included prominent digital platforms such as www.ft.com, www.investorschronicle.co.uk, and www.thebanker.com. Through my strategic approach and dedication to user-centered design, these efforts yielded tangible results, including increased user engagement, improved navigation, and an enhanced overall value proposition. My work at FT stands as a testament to my ability to navigate complex product journeys and deliver impactful outcomes that align with user needs and business goals.

Outcomes

  • Increased user engagement by 50%
  • Redesigned and launched several niche publications
